Picture prompt writing

Well done Mele for using a picture prompt and sentence start to create a story.

Here is what she wrote:

Thump! He slammed  his enormous, grass-covered foot into the middle of the road, sending dust in all directions.The giant monster carefully put back the roof down and he felt lonely and sad because he just wanted to play with someone but they thought that he was a strange monster. But then a little boy came to the monster and said “are you alright” and the monster replied “no, I am not alright, I am looking for a friend to help me fix my boat's engine for the monster's boat race tomorrow". "Oh I can help you", said the little boy but only if I can come and watch your boat race. The giant agreed.

Lest We Forget - Reading

Room 9 students have been reading the book "Lest We Forget" by Kerry Brown.

Students are learning to respond to questions about a text.

Well done to Irene for answering all the questions about the text and using full sentences! Here is what she said:

1. Grandad said there are two types of days - write down what they are.
Those who you want to remember and those you want to forget.

2. What did Mum do on the boys first day of school?
Polished his shoes until he could see his face on them.

3. What did the boys coach say about their soccer team? 
That they were like a family and is important to look after each other on the field.

4. How do YOU think the soldiers looked after each other when they were at war?
By helping if they were injured and got each other’s back like if someone is out of bullets, his/her friend will come and help out.

5. What did Mum burn in the kitchen to make the whole house smell like smoke?
It was the roast.

6. Who made the ANZAC biscuits for the soldiers?
Their families made the biscuits.

7. How did the families find out if their sons, brothers or dads had  been killed at war?
They found out through a telegram.

Dawn Parade

This week, we are learning about ANZAC Day. 

On Monday, students read the book 'Dawn Parade'.

They then had to answer and respond to questions about the text.

Well done to Irene for completing this task! Here is what she said:

1.  What date do we celebrate Anzac day?

On the 25th of April every year.

2. “There metals glinted under the streetlights. What does ‘glinted’ mean? 

It means shining.

3. ‘Leo gazed at the long list of names…”what does the word ‘gazed’ mean?

It means he was staring/looking carefully at the names.

4. Why do we wear poppies on Anzac day?

 Poppies grew in the field where soldiers died. Then this man called McCrae who was also a soldier, wrote a poem about poppies, so it’s a reminder of all the people who died in the war and represents blood spilled.

5. Why was the parade called the ‘Dawn parade?’

Soldiers wanted to remember their friends who had died so they decided to meet at dawn (early morning) because it is peaceful and quiet.

Picture Prompt Writing by Irene

Well done to Irene who finished her story based on a picture prompt. Here is what she wrote:

One day there was a giant who lived on the mountains. The next day he was so bored looking at trees and rivers, all he wanted was to have something to play with. So he climbed a very tall tree and saw a boat on the ocean. He climbed down and ran as fast as he could to get that boat. When he got to the ocean, he walked to the boat and just grabbed it. He didn’t even care about the people trying to swim to land.

When he grabbed the boat he went to a city that was right next to the ocean. He then opened a roof from someone's house and looked through it. All the people that were on the ground were screaming and running away from the giant because they thought that he was there to eat them. The person on the ground in the blue van was so scared to be stomped on that he went crazy and needed to calm down before he could drive probably.

When he finished looking into the houses, he got bored again and went to have fun playing on the mountain with his new boat. The people that ran away came back and saw that the giant was gone. Then they were happy because they did not get eaten by the giant.

I hope you enjoyed my story about a giant who lived on a mountain.

Ring Ring!

Melepalu read the story Ring Ring by Diana Noonan.

She then responded to questions about the story.

Well done Melepalu for reading the story really carefully and answering the questions using full sentences.

What was making the ‘phit, phit’ sound?

It was a fantail.

Where did Charlie wish he was?

He wished he was at Pipi Bay camping grounds with his friends.

Where were Charlie and his family staying?

They were staying at Mr.Rose’s farm.

What did Charlie and his dad make down by the river?

They made stick boats together.

What whooshed past them and cave mum a fright while they were at the river?       

A tui swooshed past them at the river.

What was making the mobile phone sound?

 It was the tui’s making the sound

Why did the family decide to go back to Pipi Bay? 

Because they didn’t want to stay near the tui’s as they were loud.

How Melepalu's lock down has been going

Well done to Melepalu for completing her writing task questionnaire about how she has been going in lock down!

Here is what she said:

1. What have you been doing at home for the last 2 weeks of lock down?

At home I have been doing my work given by school. I also have been having free time but it would be described as extra time, I have some time with my friends on computer and have time with my family as well.

2. How are you feeling? e.g. stressed because you can't leave the house, happy because you like being with your whanau.

I feel really calm during the lockdown. It turns out 

that the lock down isn't that stressful. When I am calm I can do my work in peace.

3. What do you miss the MOST since lock down has started

What I miss a lot is my friends because they are really helpful when I need them and very cheerful to me.

4. What has been your favourite game/activity you have been doing at home?

At home we have some games to play and out of all of the games I would pick UNO and maybe five hundred the card game.

5. What is your favourite food you have been eating during lock down

I do like having ice cream when it's hot but when it's cold I like having beef noodles to warm up myself.

Cleaning, washing and looking after my baby brother.

2. How are you feeling?

Sad because I do not get to play outside and not happy because  I can’t see my friends.

3. What do you miss the most since lock down started? 

What I miss the most is my school and my friends.

4. What has been your favourite game/activity you have been doing at home? 

My favourite game is Interland and studyladder.

5. What is your favourite food you have been eating during lock down?

 My favourite is corn flakes, rice, tuna and lots of fruits.

Reece baking a cake with his aunty

Reece has been baking with his aunty at home! He made a list of the ingredients he used. I wonder how it turned out??

Today me and my aunty baked a cake. It was a chocolate cake. These were the ingredients:

Milk

Sugar

Salt

Flour

Oil

Cocoa powder

Eggs

Vanilla essence

Kodi making pancakes with his brother

Kodi wrote a recount about how he made pancakes with his brother Reece. Well done Kodi for keeping up your learning at home.

In the morning I woke up and watched tv my brother Reece said “lets make pancakes”. He got the light milk and flour from the cupboard. He got a big bowl and put some flour and milk inside the bowl and got a wooden spoon to mix it. 

After my brother got the stove ready so we could cook the pancakes. He put the heat temperature to 7. Then he got a frying pan from one of the cupboards and I put in the oil while he made sure the milk and flour were ready.

We used a big spoon to put it in the frying pan. We use the spatula to flip the pancakes. Reece and I took turns making the pancakes. When all of it was ready, my brother and I gave some to our aunty and uncle and the rest of the pancakes were for me and Reece.   

What Bailey has been doing

I set a writing task this week for students to tell me about what they have been doing during lock down and how they are feeling. Here is a finished one completed by Bailey.

1: What have you been doing for the last 2 weeks of lock down 

I have been watching movies . homework and other stuff.

2: How are you feeling ? e.g. stressed  because you can’t leave the house, happy because you like being with your whanau .

I’m not stressed. I'm just happy because I spend more time with my whanau.

3: What do you miss the most since lock down started. ?

I miss school and hanging out with some of my friends.

4: What has been your favorite game / activity you have been doing at home?

My favorite game is on the PS4 and my favorite activity is playing outside with my brothers.

5: What is your favorite food you have been eating at home.

Chicken soup and drinking plenty of water.
