We make sure we look after Glenbrae School.

Library time

Students in Room 9 love going to the library to read. Irene chose a great book from our ANZAC Day display to read. 

Samoan Language Week

All week we have been celebrating Samoan Language week. Students had a lot of fun learning about Samoan culture and new everyday phrases they can say in Samoan.

At the end of the week, students came dressed in their Samoan/Pacifika wear. An assembly was held at the end of the day where we all sang the Samoan National Anthem together and they students got to come up on stage to show of their beautiful Samoan/Pacifika wear.

Confident students came up on the stage to show off their beautiful Samoan dancing.

Assembly time

At the start of each assembly, we always sing the New Zealand national anthem. Thank you Room 9 for presenting such a lovely assembly and singing our national anthem so proudly.

KIWICAN

Thanks to the amazing Kiwican instructors who come every Tuesday to teach students a lot of important things. They love have lessons with you!

Creating with our hands!

In Room 9, we love creating things with our hands! Play-dough is a great way for students to have fun and learn with at the same time!

Room 9 has been learning about Keeping Ourselves Safe. We were lucky enough to have some karate instructors come in and teach the students some self defence moves they can easily use.

The students had so much fun learning new skills.

Keeping Ourselves Safe

In Room 9, students have been learning about Keeping Ourselves safe.

They are learning lots of important information about how to be confident, express their feelings and how to be safe.

It is important for student to learn these skills as they begin to get older. 

This is supported by NZ Police and we were lucky enough to have Constable Paul come in and talk to the kids about safety.

Keeping Ourselves Safe enables children and young people to learn and apply a range of safety skills that they can use when interacting with others. 

Anzac Art

Our inquiry for the first 2 weeks of term 2 has been about ANZAC day.

Students have been learning lots new information and have been really enjoying learning about such an important occasion in New Zealand history.

 Students have started created some wonderful ANZAC art to display in our classroom.

They started off by sketching a hill, covered in poppies with crosses on the top.

Then they painted the sunset background using warm colours.

Students painted the poppies red and the crosses and hill black.

I look forward to seeing the finished paintings.

Well done room 9 for being such creative artists!

Assembly by Room 9

On Friday the 10th of May, it was Room 9's turn to present assembly. 

Seven confident students practiced their assembly script all week to they were prepared.

Room 9 did a great job of presenting and all of the students spoke clearly and confidently.

Well done to the Dance Club for performing a wonderful dance to Shotgun by George Ezra. Here's a short preview!

Sailing

A few lucky students from Room 9, 10 and 7 got to go sailing for the day Okahu Bay. They had a great experience learning new skills and trying something completely different and out of their comfort zones. Below is a piece of writing done by Alyanna which explained her day at sailing. 

On early Thursday we went sailing.

Before we had to go sailing we had to wake up before 8:00 because we weren’t allowed to be late.

Some of the students were almost late, lucky they made it on time before the bus came.

When the bus came, of we went to Okahu Bay.

We needed wetsuits so we won’t get that wet and we also needed a partner to go to sailing.

First thing we did was sail to the end of the bay which was a road I didn’t really understand the name of the road but it was so fun sailing.

My friend and I who went on a sailboat together were struggling a little bit then after a few minutes we got the hang of it.   

We had to follow John and Justin who were the instructors and they were on a speed boat which can fit four students and more. 

At the end after lunch we went to go sailing again and we had to jump out of our sail boat and swim in the water it was fun and also scary but John was looking after the area I was in meanwhile Justine was looking in the other area.

It was so fun and I wanted to stay a little more but we had to go back to school. We received certificates and a sticker it was a super exciting and I liked the part where we had to swim.

            IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE AND I HOPE I CAN COME BACK AGAIN.

ANZAC DAY

Room 9 has been learning about ANZAC day. Students have enjoyed learning about the importance of ANZAC and have created some great slideshows displaying some things that they have learnt.

Easter art!

Every Tuesday afternoon, students go to their chosen club. In art club today, we created some easter egg collage art. Well done Shane for making a beautiful collage easter egg!

Since Easter this year falls in the first term holidays, Room 9 managed to create some wonderful Easter bunny art on the last day of term.

They thought carefully about what background they wanted to do and then drew a variety of patterns on the bunny to create effect.

Learning to play tennis

In term 1, students at Glenbrae were lucky enough to have Peter from Tennis Auckland to teach them how to play tennis. Students enjoyed learning a new sport and lots of new skills. Every lesson was interesting and fun for the students. Thank you so much Peter for teaching Room 9 how to play tennis!

The Heart

Room 9 has been learning about the heart and how it works. Melepalu has created a wonderful slide about the parts of the heart and what they do. Well done Melepalu, keep up the hard work!

Autumn Acrostic poems

It's well into autumn now and students in Room 9 have been creating acrostic poems about the changes that are happening. Below is a wonderful poem written by Jamal.

Amazing acorns and shiny leaves fall from the beautiful trees.
Under the trees are old and crispy leaves.
There are small leaves and big leaves hanging on the tall trees.
Under the trees are damp and old leaves.
Marvellous and sparkly leaves are hanging around on the large branches.
Now it is cold and the wind hits me when I go outside so I get snuggled in my bed.

Pepeha presentations

On Wednesday, five students from each class presented their pepeha to the whole school. Each presenter had a student introducing them and thanking them. All students spoke confidently and clearly. Well done Room 9 and all other class who presented!

WOW!

Have a look at some wonderful art Room 9 has created. They had to sketch out a sun and use variety of colours to create effect. They look absolutely fantastic displayed outside our classroom! We have some talented artists in Room 9!

Abstract Art

Students from Room 9 and other classes have been creating some excellent art pieces in their Art Club they have every Monday afternoon. Today, we used Picasso style art techniques to create self portraits. The students used examples to help them sketch their faces first. Then they started to use a variety of different coloured pastels to colour/blend the face and background. I can't wait to see their final product!

Autumn Poems

Today in class, students wrote autumn acrostic poems describing the changes they are seeing at the moment outside. Well done to William for creating a descriptive and interesting poem!

Acorns and shiny leaves falling down from the tall trees.
Under the trees, there are crunching golden leaves.
The trees are warmed by the sun, as hundreds of leaves fall.
Under my feet are crispy yellow leaves.
My body is cold in autumn, as the weather begins to change.
Near my feet are brown crispy leaves.

Information report writing.

Our inquiry topic this term has been all about the human body. Students in Room 9 have been learning about how to write information reports about the topic. Below is an example by Melepalu about how the digestive system works.

We are learning about the digestive system.

The digestive system starts in the mouth. The mouth helps breaks down the food we eat and turns it to smaller pieces, easier to swallow .Then it travels to the esophagus. The esophagus helps us swallow the food we eat and it makes it easier for us to swallow by having strong muscles that push the food down into the stomach.

The third stage is the stomach. The stomach stores the food we eat and mixes with the acid juices but then the food breaks down into even smaller pieces and sent to the small intestine.

The forth station is the small intestine. It absorbs the food from the stomach even more, and absorbs nutrients and minerals into the bloodstream. It then gets pulled into the large intestine. The large intestine comes fifth and pulls the water and the salt from the leftover food.

Finally the last part of the digestive system is the rectum. The rectum helps us go to the toilet and let's the waste go.

Food for thought

This week in Room 9 we have been learning all about the nutritional value of food products and how to read food labels. We started off by learning about different food groups and what they included. Then we moved on to reading food labels. When reading food labels, we looked for these 5 things: energy, fat, sugar, fibre and sodium. We were lucky enough to head to Pak n Save to put what we had learnt into action. We went around the supermarket looking for certain food products and completed the form about their nutritional value. We had SO much fun learning about food and how to read food labels.

How to be an active listener

In Room 9, we have been learning about how to be an active listener. We brainstormed lots of excellent ideas as a class. The students then created their own slideshow about what an active listener is and tips on how to be an active listener. Here is a great example by Rose. We hope you enjoy reading some handy tips on active listening.

Sunsmart

We have started off the year by learning about how to be SUNSMART. Students have been working hard to create a poster all about being sunsmart. 

Wear a hat, put on SPF 30 sunscreen, find shade, drink water, wear sunglasses and cover up!

The students posters have been displayed in the class.

Fun in the sun

What a beautiful day to have some fun in the sun with lots of water! Glenbrae students enjoyed an awesome day competing against each other in their house groups. They competed in 5 different activities and rotated around each one, trying to fill up their house buckets the fastest!

Swimming!

WOW! Look at this beautiful weather! We have started swimming every day at Glenbrae School and the students are having a great time cooling themselves off in the pool and learning how to swim!

Make sure your children remember their togs, because we swim EVERY day!
